Manchester City handed Arsenal a chance to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat by Newcastle United at St James’ Park. Harvey Barnes struck a brace for the Toon, who ended their own winless run in the league. Ruben Dias equalised for Pep Guardiola’s side in a four-minute flurry, but they could not hang on as a raucous Geordie faithful roared their side to three crucial points.
City had been hoping to cut Arsenal’s lead at the summit to just a single point ahead of Sunday’s north London derby, but they were beaten by a workhorse Newcastle side who had the luck of VAR smiling down on them. Firstly, Fabian Schar escaped conceding a first-half penalty after his late challenge on Phil Foden, and then Bruno Guimaraes was found to have not stepped offside as he nodded against the crossbar before Barnes turned home the rebound for his and the hosts’ second on 70 minutes.
Both sides had chances aplenty in the first period, with Erling Haaland and Nick Woltemade denied by Nick Pope and Gianluigi Donnarumma countless times as neither striker could add to their already impressive top-flight tallies. The result leaves the Magpies still in 14th, but they are now four points off Tottenham in eighth place. City, meanwhile, dropped to third after Chelsea’s earlier 2-0 win at Burnley.

And for the visitors...
16:50 , Oli Gent... for City, it’s the same lineup as against Liverpool.
Some surprise there with it being Guardiola, but there is no room for ‘Pep roulette’ here.
Nunes continues at right-back - and will likely to be a point of weakness identified by the hosts - but he has been solid in recent weeks.
Nico O’Reilly continues as the club’s first-choice left-back with Josko Gvardiol tucked into the middle alongside Ruben Dias.
In centre-field, Nico deputises once more for Rodri as the lone anchor, with Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva the creative forces either side as free-roaming eights that will look to pick up pockets of space between the lines.
Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki will keep the width on the flanks, although don’t be surprised to see the latter swap positions with Silva at times in a bid to add an extra dimension in central areas.
Let's analyse these lineups, shall we?
16:40 , Oli GentFor the hosts, it’s a 4-3-3, as per usual, but the main talking point is the absence of Anthony Gordon, who doesn’t make the squad.
As a result, it’s Harvey Barnes wide left, and he will look to get some change out of natural midfielder Matheus Nunes at right-back for City.
Nick Pope does return in goal - a big boost for the Toon - but it sees Sven Botman dropped to the bench for Fabian Schar. The Swiss should be the marshal up against Erling Haaland, while Malick Thiaw is likely to drop behind and look to sweep up, as well as match the striker stride for stride...if he can.
Kieran Trippier doesn’t make the XI either, but Tino Livramento is fit to play at right-back, and Lewis Hall will offer more thrust down the left in Dan Burn’s absence.
In the engine room, there’s no messing about. Tonali and Joelinton are the snapping, aggressive ball-winners that will cover every blade of grass, while Guimaraes is the free-roaming quarterback in possession, and he will be steely out of it, holding his position in front of the back four to break up play.
Man City lineup
16:30 , Oli GentMan City XI: Donnarumma; Nunes, Dias, Gvardiol, O’Reilly; Nico, Silva, Foden; Cherki, Doku, Haaland

16:20 , Oli GentHere’s how the hosts are set up...

Standard Sport prediction
15:40 , Oli GentMan City are in form, Newcastle are not, but the form book usually goes out of the window in these kinds of games.
The Gallowgate End will be at full voice looking to roar on the Toon, and, if their star players return to the side, it could be a thrilling encounter.
Should the home side’s lack of quality depth get exposed, however, then City could run out comfortable victors.
Man City to win, 2-1.
Man City team news
15:30 , Oli GentAs for the visitors, it is the same pool of players to choose from once again as Rodri will not feature as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury.
Mateo Kovacic is out until the new year after surgery on his ankle.
Newcastle team news
15:20 , Oli GentNew signing Yoane Wissa is still waiting for his debut after an injury-ridden start to life in the north-east. He will miss the visit of Man City and Dan Burn is suspended for this game after his red card against Brentford.
However, Nick Pope and Anthony Gordon could return after withdrawing from England duty.
Valentino Livramento, a transfer target for Man City, could also be back in the fold alongside Joelinton but William Osula has been ruled out.
