Newcastle United urged to sign West Ham's Declan Rice despite Arsenal preference

Newcastle United have been told their summer recruitment plans should centre around making a 'statement' with the signing of Declan Rice.

The West Ham midfielder is being heavily linked with a move away from the London Stadium this summer, with plenty of clubs linked with interest.

It was reported recently that Bayern Munich were keen to bring him to the Bundesliga but his preference would be Arsenal and to remain in London.

However, former Tottenham striker Darren Bent believes Newcastle United should go for his signature. Eddie Howe is expected to spend in the summer and add to the team in a bid to build on this season's fabulous top four finish.

They also have the carrot of Champions League football to offer as they look to possibly entice some big names to St James' Park.

One of those, according to Bent, should be Rice.

Speaking on Talksport, Bent said: "When you think about Newcastle and the rebuild you want a statement signing and someone that’s going to take them to the next level.

“But could Eddie Howe deal with a level of expectations and attitude when it comes to that next level?

“Well, Declan is the complete opposite of that. Top-class player. The right attitude. He’s not going to give you any problems, if ever Newcastle wanted to make a statement signing, then there is one."
