Newcastle United trio using summer break to step up fitness ahead of fight to stay in Howe's plans

While Bruno Guimaraes enjoys a lavish honeymoon in his native Brazil and Fabian Schar enjoys 'island time' with his better half, some Newcastle United stars have been hard at work preparing for the new season.

Sean Longstaff and Jacob Murphy, two players who have saved their St James' Park careers in recent months and face a challenge keeping their starting roles in Eddie Howe's starting XI, have both been putting the hard yards in behind the scenes this week.

The duo joined in with a training session at Newcastle Blue Star as they were put through their paces with the West End outfit. "Comparing fitness levels and getting tactical insight from two soon to be Champions League players…..standard Tuesday night," tweeted the club's official account.

Meanwhile, Joe Willock has been stepping up his recovery from a hamstring injury that ruled him out of an almost certain England call-up earlier this month. The midfielder is now back on the grass after time on the treatment table and has been showcasing his recovery in recent days.

Willock shared an update this week that read: "Don't let anyone tell you being a footballer is easy." The former Arsenal star also posted a clip of him working hard strengthening his legs with the caption: "Next season, new goals, same focus, taking it to the next level."

Willock enjoyed a fantastic season as Newcastle reached the Champions League and found his best form at the start of 2023 to enter Gareth Southgate's international plans. With the Magpies planning to bolster their midfield options this summer, the 25-year-old will need to work hard to keep his spot in the side.

Newcastle stars will be back in action in two weeks time as they take on Gateshead at the International Stadium. Howe will also take a big squad of players over to the United States for the Premier League Summer Series towards the end of July.
