Newcastle United players urged improve service to 'cool' Callum Wilson

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce admits his side must crank up the service levels for Callum Wilson.

The £20million striker dropped a hint that he could start against Brentford tonight in the League Cup quarter-final.

Wilson has been used sparingly in the competition with just one cameo at Newport County in the last round, although he proved to be crucial that night by converting a penalty in the shoot-out which sets up this evening's capital encounter against the Bees.

Wilson took his tally to eight goals for the season - a remarkable stat when you consider he has been afforded just 12 shots on target.

Bruce said: "He has been the difference since he walked through the door.

"Callum has that instinct. He gets the penalty too (vs Fulham) and he should have had one at Leeds the other night as well.

"He leads the line so well. Look it's been a wonderful start for him."

Now Bruce has asked his players to increase his chances by getting him on the ball more often.

The Toon manager said: "We have to improve the service to him and get better on it.

"For Callum himself, he stays cool.

"The goalkeeper tried to mess up the penalty spot the other night during the VAR check.

"But he was always going to stick it in the net."
