Newcastle United headlines as Brazil legend Roberto Carlos backs Joelinton to earn international call-up

A look at the latest Newcastle United headlines on Sunday, June 12.

Brazil legend Roberto Carlos backs Joelinton to earn international recognition

Legendary full-back Roberto Carlos believes Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton is good enough to win a call-up to the Brazilian national team.

Joelinton's transformation from timid striker to all-action box to box midfielder was one of the Premier League's stories of the season.

And former Real Madrid and Brazil full-back Carlos, who won both the Champions league and World Cup during his illustrious career, believes Joelinton can earn a national team call-up if he continues his stellar form ahead of Qatar 2022.

"Joelinton just has to keep up the good performances," Carlos told ChronicleLive.

Newcastle supremo Dan Ashworth in stands as Sven Botman stars for Holland U21s

Dan Ashworth was in attendance for Newcastle United linked defender Sven Botman's Holland U21s performance against Wales U21s.

Holland and Botman managed to prevail against the Welsh at Parc Y-Scarlets thanks to a late Lutsharel Geertruida winner.

Ashworth's attendance could be seen as killing two birds with one stone. His son Zac was in the Wales squad for the game against Holland, although the West Brom left-back did not come off the bench for Paul Bodin's side.

Departing Newcastle United defender thanks Magpies after opting against new contract

Newcastle United defender Lewis Cass has departed the club to join newly promoted League One side Port Vale.

The North Shields lad spent a successful loan spell at Vale Park last term but despite being offered an extended deal at United he has made the tough decision to leave the Magpies.

"I would like to thank everyone associated with during my last 10 years at this great club," said Cass.
