Newcastle United have handed rivals a major boost leaving them 'full of energy'

If there's one side Newcastle United did not want to give a boost to, it was probably Watford but failure to beat them last week has handed the Hornets just that.

Claudio Ranieri's men came into the game having lost seven on the bounce, and United had the perfect opportunity to not only beat a rival but also climb out of the relegation zone.

They, as we know, failed to do that - and while Watford had to wait until the 88th minute, it was not a case of a point 'rescued' but more that they would have felt robbed had Newcastle held onto the lead.

Given it was such a late goal - for many of a Newcastle persuasion, it felt like a defeat, and the hope has to be that Eddie Howe and his coaching staff have stopped that feeling from setting in around the squad.

For Watford - it felt like a win, although given there was frustration from within their camp it wasn't all three points, that says a lot about Newcastle's chances of survival.

If their rivals - and namely the one rival they have to aim to catch to keep their Premier League status, felt frustrated at the result, who do United look at with confidence of beating?

Ranieri, ahead of Watford's clash with Norwich on Friday, pointed out one of United's many issues - the lack of goals, as he told reporters he was happy with the performance.

"We created many chances," he said, "in the second half they scored a goal but they did not shoot at goal (after) and for us, it's very important we now get a result against Norwich."

The result against Newcastle has left Watford 'full of energy,' Ranieri added.

That was always likely to be added impact of the result - and it seems confidence is not in short supply at Vicarage Road - Newcastle have seemingly done more than drop two points, they've boosted the spirits of the one side they need to catch.
