Newcastle United expect more good news on player contracts after Martin Dubravka deal

A number of Newcastle United players are in talks about extending their contracts at the club and Steve Bruce expects more 'good news' after Martin Dubravka signed a new long-term deal with the club.

The Slovakia international put pen to paper on a new six-year contract on Thursday and several of his team-mates are expected to follow suit and commit their futures to the Magpies.

Matty Longstaff is into the final season of his current deal while Isaac Hayden, Matt Ritchie and Fabian Schar are among those key players who are out of contract in 2021.

Bruce sat down with managing director Lee Charnley earlier this week and is confident further breakthroughs are on the cards at St James' Park, with the Newcastle head coach keen to offer Sean Longstaff improved terms.

"It was fine. It was just business as usual. We get together once or twice a week and I think that is only normal but here it is a little bit different, isn't it?" he told reporters about the meeting ahead of the game against Wolves.

"We have a meeting twice a week. I speak to him every day on the phone. It's just business as usual. We just carry on and see where we get to.

"He is talking with two, three or four of the players' agents - the two Longstaffs, one or two others - so I think that will continue but I think Martin was going on for three-and-a-half months since I arrived. I expect good news in that respect."

One of Bruce's medium-term priorities when he was appointed Newcastle head coach was to tie down the nucleus of the squad to new contracts.

While Dubravka's original deal did not run out until 2022, the club were keen to offer him improved terms to recognise the impact the goalkeeper had made since joining the club.

Is tying down those players as important as the new additions the Magpies will make in 2020?

"Yes, especially the ones who have only got six months or 12 months," Bruce added. "On Martin, I think it was a big reward - he's done so well in a short period of time so the club's rewarded him and he's delighted to sign, which is good."
