Newcastle United boss in update on future of Nottingham Forest target

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has spoken about the future of Nottingham Forest target Dwight Gayle.

A number of teams, including the Reds, are said to be keeping tabs on the Magpies striker ahead of the January transfer window.

Gayle has featured just five times for Newcastle this season - all of them as a substitute - and has yet to find the back of the net, having been sidelined with a calf injury until October.

It comes on the back of a successful loan spell at West Bromwich Albion last term when he hit 24 goals in 41 appearances.

And while it has previously been suggested United could be willing to let the 29-year-old leave midway through the campaign, Bruce says he hopes the front man remains at St James’ Park.

Asked about Gayle in his pre-match press conference, he said: “I’ve had many conversations about Dwight.

“I’m sure the one thing he will want is a chance and so far, he’s only come on as a sub a couple of times.

“Of course, a lot of that was due to injury.

“I’ve said many times he’s an important part (of the team).

“If we’re going to go forward, we need three or four strikers.

“I don’t know how many times I’ve said it about Dwight Gayle but I’ve always thought very highly of him.

“I think I tried to buy him three times but could never quite afford him.

“I hope he stays and honestly hope he will get his chance sooner rather than later, and when he gets it, I hope he takes it.”
