Newcastle United attempting to broker loan deal for Arsenal defender Rob Holding

Newcastle United are in the running to sign Arsenal full-back Rob Holding on a season long loan.

The centre-back, who can also play right-back, is expected to leave the Gunners this summer but Leeds United are also keen on the Stalybridge-born player.

Sources close to the player have indicated a loan move to Tyneside is a "possibility" but there is no shortage of interest in the 24-year-old.

Personal terms are yet to be discussed between the defender or United and his future is expected to be assessed after today's Community Shield clash with Liverpool.

Holding has made 39 appearances for Arsenal but would face competition at Newcastle in the centre-back area unless somebody moves on.

Florian Lejeune has been linked with a move back to Ligue 1 and whether he is being lined up for an exit to raise funds for a striker remains to be seen.

United have been linked with Dimitris Giannoulis at left-back but his club PAOK may want more than the £4million deal that has been reported recently.

Danny Rose or Jetro Willems could offer other options on loan deals later in the window.
