Newcastle told Marcus Thuram would be a 'fantastic' signing amid Memphis Depay decision

Newcastle United should prioritise a move for Marcus Thuram ahead of former Manchester United star Memphis Depay. That is the view of former Magpies winger John Barnes, who reckons the France international would be a 'fantastic' signing.

Newcastle have inevitably been linked to a host of attacking talents ahead of the January transfer window. Thuram has enjoyed a fine start to the season with Borussia Monchengladbach, and is expected to depart the Bundlesliga club with his contract set to expire next summer.

Depay is also reportedly on the market as Barcelona look to balance their books following a summer spending spree, and both players have been linked with Newcastle. However, Barnes feels the Netherlands international's ill-fated stint at Old Trafford should lead Newcastle to make a move for Thuram instead.

Barnes told BonusCodeBets: “The harmony has to be right and they have to go slow and both Depay and Thuram can suit them. I would choose Thuram probably, because there’s no baggage with him coming to England and having seemed to have failed, if you would like, as much as Memphis Depay has done well since he left and he knows the English league.

“Memphis Depay has already been in England and it didn’t work out for him, so maybe there’s a question mark about him playing in England, even from his own confidence point of view. Marcus Thuram, I think would be a fantastic player for them.”
