Newcastle star shares dressing room reaction to Fulham being relegated

Jacob Murphy has shared the insight of the Newcastle United dressing room in the hours after the club's Premier League status was confirmed - at the expense of Fulham.

The West London side lost to Burnley on Monday night - a result which sent them back down the Championship - and Murphy has revealed the reaction of his Newcastle side.

"There was lot of relief," he said. "We are proud that we have retained our status in the Premier League for another season but next season we know we need to kick on, really go for things and do better than we have done this season."

The Magpies looked in danger of being caught by Fulham following an embarrassing three-nil to Brighton back in March but since then have gone on to collect 11 points from a possible 15 - including a 4-2 victory over Leicester City last week.

Speaking to NUFC TV, Murphy shared his views on why the squad had managed to turn it around.

"A few things, change in the system - the way we've been going about things. Cal [Callum Wilson] and Al [Allan Saint-Maximin] coming back in, that was a big boost for us but just the togetherness of everybody that we are going to get out of this mess - and we have shown that," he said.

Murphy looked to have been on his way out of Tyneside but has taken his chance in the team and is now the first-choice wing-back, a turn-around the 26-year-old has put down to hard work.

"I believe so," he said when asked if had the backing of Steve Bruce. "I think my hard work has not gone unnoticed, I think I'm becoming a real asset to the team so I just want to keep going, keep improving and keep making everyone proud.

"I know how I'm progressing and I've got three big games to see out of what could be a really big season for me.

"That is where my focus is at, finish as strongly as I can, hopefully, get a goal and assist along the way and keep improving in that right wing-back slot.

"It's great personally for me to be involved in the last couple of months - to have a good run of games and to be part of a winning side.

"I'm proud of myself, proud of the boys and everyone deserves credit because we have been playing good stuff."
