Newcastle sent Ross Barkley transfer message and Magpies' 'interest' in French defender

Here is your 4am Newcastle United digest:

Barkley a 'good fit'

Newcastle United would be a 'good fit' for England international midfielder Ross Barkley this summer.

That is according to former England and Aston Villa forward Gabby Agbonlahor who feels Steve Bruce 'would get the best out of' the 27-year-old at St James' Park.

Barkley spent last season on loan at Aston Villa from Chelsea and while he impressed in patches, the Villans are set to opt against turning the deal in permanent.

Chelsea have just won the Champions League under Thomas Tuchel and Barkley's chances of resurrecting his career at Stamford Bridge appear unlikely.

As a result, the 33-cap international will be on the lookout for a new club and Agbonlahor feels Newcastle could be the perfect destination for Barkley to kickstart his career, either on a permanent basis or on a loan deal.

Perraud interest

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in a move for Brest left-back Romain Perraud.

However, L'Equipe claim Southampton are the favourites to land the 23-year-old who enjoyed an impressive season in Ligue 1.

The full-back registered seven assists and three goals, and his performances are said to have attracted the attention of the Magpies and Leeds United.

The report claims any deal for Perraud would have to exceed £8.5m, and that the defender is 'believed to be closer' to agreeing a deal with Southampton at this stage.
