Newcastle's Centre for Life ice skating rink will not open this winter

An annual Christmas tradition won't go ahead this year as the Centre for Life confirms its ice rink will not open for the 2020-21 winter season.

The Centre for Life says its team looked at every option for how they could open the outdoor rink safely this winter, but have decided it is too risky, in the face of tighter restrictions in the North East due to the on-going coronavirus pandemic and the possibility of a national lockdown.

Linda Conlon, chief executive of Life, said: “It’s with a heavy heart that we’ve reached this decision. The rink is now an annual, much-loved tradition and a key part of the festive calendar.

"This will be the first time in nearly 20 years that we haven’t run it.

"I understand that many will be disappointed, but we feel this is the responsible decision to take.

"Fingers crossed it will be back next year."

Life Centre remains open.

While Coronavirus will likely lead to further Christmas cancellations, there are still events set to go ahead.

Fenwick has said it will be arranging a Christmas window. The department store will also host its annual Santa events.

There are pantomimes at both the Theatre Royal and Tyne Theatre set to go ahead too, while Hadrian's Tipi is now open in Stack.
