Newcastle midfielder Isaac Hayden suffers nightmare Norwich City start after another knee operation

Isaac Hayden has had to undergo another knee operation after a nightmare start to his Norwich City tenure. The Newcastle United midfielder became the first signing for the Canaries this summer - on a season-long loan with the view to making the deal a permanent one.

The former Arsenal midfielder was not named in Eddie Howe's 25-man Premier League squad after an operation on his knee which would keep him out for the remainder of the campaign. Hayden worked his way back to fitness as the season went on, but the 27-year-old has already missed the opening two fixtures of Norwich's pre-season calendar.

The new Canary has seen his knee swell up in training and manager Dean Smith has given an update on when they might see him play at Carrow Road. Speaking to the Pink Un, Smith said: “Isaac went to see a specialist yesterday. His knee had been swelling up, which I mentioned at the weekend.

“They flushed it out and I don’t expect to see him before the early part of the season. The consultant was really happy with what he did and that will be good news for us.

“He had a week’s really good training and for some reason then got swelling on his knee, so that has been flushed out. Just a minor operation.”

Hayden's injury meant he wasn't able to join in with Smith's squad as they jetted off to Germany last week and Smith claims it's the same knee that he problems with during his stint at St. James' Park.
