Newcastle fans debate 'sliding doors' Rafa Benitez decision after Everton sacking

Rafa Benitez's expected sacking at Everton has prompted debate among Newcastle United supporters.

The former Magpies boss was dismissed following the Toffees' defeat at bottom-club Norwich City on Saturday afternoon.

Michael Keane's own goal and an Adam Idah strike sealed a vital victory for Newcastle's relegation rivals, with Richarlison's second-half strike proving a consolation.

A club statement released on Sunday read: "Everton Football Club can confirm the departure of Rafael Benitez as first team manager.

" Benitez, who joined Everton in June 2021, has left the Club with immediate effect.

"An update on a permanent replacement will be made in due course."

It is a decision which has inevitably generation discussion among Newcastle fans, given Benitez's popularity during his three-year tenure at St James' Park.

Eddie Howe's side have won just once all season, and conceded a deflating late equaliser to fellow strugglers Watford on Saturday afternoon.

The prospect of Benitez returning in an advisory capacity or even for a second stint in charge has been debated, with many supporters arguing the Spaniard's chapter on Tyneside is closed.
