Newcastle evening headlines as Bruce outlines Saint-Maximin transfer stance

Newcastle United head coach Steve Bruce admits Allan Saint-Maximin will 'inevitably' attract transfer interest ths summer.

Elsewhere, the Magpies boss has hinted that Callum Wilson will be ready to start this weekend against Arsenal.

Here are your top Newcastle United stories for April 30:

ASM transfer stance

Allan Saint-Maximin will 'inevitably' attract interest but Steve Bruce has warned the 'last thing' Newcastle United want to do is sell their best players.

It is not a coincidence that Newcastle have looked a different proposition since Saint-Maximin recovered from a knee injury earlier this month.

Saint-Maximin's displays have certainly not gone unnoticed but, having only signed a new six-year deal last October, it is hard to see many teams being able to seriously test Newcastle's resolve given the impact the pandemic has had on clubs' finances.

Wilson to start?

Callum Wilson is in line to start Newcastle United's home clash with Arsenal.

The Magpies' 10-goal top scorer has been restricted to cameo roles from the bench since shaking off a hamstring injury.

But Bruce admits Wilson - who had a debatable equaliser chalked off against Liverpool - is in a good place ahead of the weekend.

Arteta's 'difficult decision'

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admits it was a 'difficult decision' to allow Joe Willock to join Newcastle United on loan in January.

The England under-21 international midfielder had impressed for the Gunners in the Europa League this term but struggled for regular game-time in the Premier League.

As such, he was granted a loan move to Tyneside where he has established himself as an integral part of Steve Bruce's plans.

The 21-year-old has scored four goals in 10 appearances for Newcastle - including three in his last three games - to help United establish a nine point gap between themselves and the Premier League's relegation zone.

He has outscored a host of Gunners midfielders in the Premier League as a result but Arteta feels his form at Newcastle has justified the decision to sanction his temporary exit.

Bruce on revival

Steve Bruce has thanked his players for their efforts after turning the season around.

The Magpies were staring relegation in the face after the 3-0 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion just over a month ago.

But Newcastle are now four games unbeaten and Bruce has even found himself as a contender for April manager of the month.

O'Brien link

Newcastle United are weighing up a summer swoop for 'highly-rated' Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O'Brien.

That's according to the Sun, who report the 22-year-old's form in the Championship this season has attracted attention from several Premier League clubs.

Fan boost

Premier League clubs are set to be allowed up to 500 away fans attending matches in the final two rounds of the season as part of crowds of 10,000 supporters.

It means Newcastle United will be able to count on the support of the Toon Army in the potentially decisive final Premier League game of the season away at Fulham.

According to a report in The Times, Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has written to the 20 top flight clubs outlining that the government is planning to relax the ban on away fans after May 17.

Social media boycott

The Chronicle is joining the unprecedented boycott of social media this weekend as we stand in solidarity with those who have been subject to online discrimination and abuse - and demand change.

Our Twitter, Facebook and Instagram feeds will be switched off from 3pm on Friday until 11.59pm on Monday, joining the Premier League, Newcastle and other professional clubs, footballers and other significant bodies in the game as the first step in calling out the unacceptable rise of abuse and toxicity on platforms.

This has to be the start of tackling a problem that has gone on far too long with too little action as prominent players, broadcasters and figures in the game have been left to bear the brunt of a problem that football needs to eradicate.
