Newcastle Dog and Cat shelter name adorable kittens Captain and Tom

Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter has named two adorable kittens Captain and Tom in honour of Captain Sir Tom Moore.

The Second World War veteran won the hearts of the nation after walking over 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday, which raised almost £39m for NHS charities.

Sir Tom’s fundraising efforts inspired community spirit, something that the Dog and Cat Shelter heavily rely on to get by.

Captain and Tom’s one-year-old mother was handed into their care, in December when she was expecting a litter of kittens.

Just five days later, Rose gave birth to four kittens, one sadly passed away and one weaker sibling is now currently being fostered by a member of staff.

But these two handsome brothers, Captain and Tom, are now ready to find their forever homes.

Jill Neary, senior rehoming manager, said: "They are both gorgeous, lovely, friendly and beautiful, typical kittens.

"They are playful and mischievous but they are quite calm and a bit shy, however, they will soon come out of their shells in a home environment.

"Our social media went berserk, we have a lot of people very interested in rehoming them so we definitely won’t struggle to find them a home.

"We have named them in honour of Captain Tom as we want to respect how he brought the community together.

"We rely on our community’s support and we try to encourage community spirit whenever we can

"We try to thank our community for what they do for us and we think this is a lovely way to continue Captain Tom’s memory."

Captain and Tom aren’t ready to be rehomed yet as they need their first vaccination, neutering and health check before they start their new lives.

Mum, Rose is waiting to be neutered and after she recovers will be available for rehoming to enjoy a life that she deserves.

As the coronavirus pandemic led to the Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter closing their doors and fundraising events being cancelled, the charity has a desperate plea for donations.

Jill added: "There is no better feeling in the world than knowing that you’ve played a part in the positive journey for animals to have a better life.

"We are unable to bring in physical donations due to the current circumstances but we would appreciate more than anything any monetary donations the public can give as we have struggled in 2020 due to the lack of fundraising events.

"The veterinary care that goes towards cats like Captain and Tom for their vaccinations and neutering, all comes at a huge cost to us.

"We can only run from donations, every penny makes a difference and is greatly appreciated to help us look after animals in our care."
