A NEWCASTLE nurse has been honoured with a lifetime achievement award for her contribution to the state's health system.
Marion Hawker, a diabetes clinical nurse consultation, won the Judith Meppem Lifetime Achievement Award at Wednesday night's Excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Awards.
Ms Hawker, who began her career in 1971 at Taree, joined the Greater Newcastle Sector Diabetes Service in 2003.
The honour recognises her efforts to develop new ways to provide diabetes care in the Hunter.
"I've got a great team behind me," she said.
"To even be nominated for the award was exciting. I was completely overwhelmed when I was announced as the winner.
"To be recognised among so many dedicated and enthusiastic nurses was hugely humbling and a great honour."
NSW chief nursing and midwifery officer Jacqui Cross said the winners were "the best of the best".
"They do an amazing job and I thank them for their passionate, dedicated approach to helping patients and improving healthcare," she said.
