Newcastle co-owner Jamie Reuben issues message after defeat at Sheffield Wednesday

Newcastle United co-owner Jamie Reuben has shared his thoughts on the Magpies' shock 2-1 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

The Toon were eliminated in the third round of the FA Cup for the third season on the spin, after Josh Windass' double earned the League One side a shock victory.

Wednesday's victory ended Newcastle's 15-match unbeaten run across all competitions, and Reuben admits that an FA Cup run 'wasn't meant to be' for Eddie Howe's men.

Reuben tweeted: "It happens - the team worked hard but it wasn't meant to be. Congratulations to Sheffield Wednesday and best of luck for the next round. Big second half of the season for Newcastle."

Howe made eight changes from the side that drew 0-0 against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Monday. The Magpies still have a chance of lifting silverware when they face Leicester City in the Carabao Cup quarter-final at St James' Park on Tuesday.

Newcastle called on the cavalry in the second half with the introductions of Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes and Miguel Almiron.

Guimaraes reduced the deficit 21 minutes from time, but failed to find an equaliser, as Chris Wood blazed a golden opportunity over the woodwork. The Magpies are still unbeaten in the Premier League in their last 13 games and sit third in the table.
