Newcastle boss Steve Bruce opens up on "never done before" Premier League preparation

Steve Bruce claims he is putting his Newcastle United players through training they have "never done before" ahead of the Premier League's return.

Matches are set to resume on 17 June after a three-month suspension, with 92 games to be played.

Ahead of the restart and after weeks of training individually during lockdown, players returned to group sessions last month and resumed full-contact drills last week.

And Bruce admits it was challenging not knowing when his Magpies squad would return to training together.

“That was the difficult part, not knowing when we were going to get going, having it put off for three weeks and then another three weeks, sorting through the logistics of where the players were and when we could get them back in,” he told The Athletic.

Bruce has also kept a keen eye on the restart of the Bundesliga, which resumed matches behind closed doors last month.

And he claims the number of injuries in the German top-flight is a cause for concern which has prompted him to introduce unprecedented forms of preparation.

Bruce added: "Our focus now is doing a form of preparation that we’ve never done before.

"How do we do it, what can we do and how can we make it so the players are ready? What kind of input can we put into a training session to make sure they’re in their best physical condition?

“If you look at Germany, for example, there’s been a 250 per cent increase in injuries over the past three weeks.

"In the first six games, I believe there were eight muscle injuries, so we’re doing everything we possibly can to get the players in the right condition to go and play.

"And then, again, we’ve got to face the fact of playing in front of an empty stadium, which in itself is always going to be difficult.”
