NEW DELHI: As the one-day World Cup opener approaches between England and New Zealand on October 5, New Zealand's coach, Gary Stead, is hoping that star all-rounder Ben Stokes won't deliver another batting masterclass like the record-breaking performance at The Oval in their recent clash.
In the third ODI, Stokes delivered a phenomenal 124-ball 182, setting a new record for England's highest individual score in the 50-overs format. His outstanding performance guided England to a resounding 181-run victory.
This upcoming match will mark a significant encounter between the two teams, reminiscent of the 2019 World Cup final where England clinched the World Cup title.
When asked about his thoughts on Stokes, who hails from New Zealand, Coach Stead expressed his admiration for the talented all-rounder but emphasized his hope that his bowlers had already witnessed the best of Stokes.
"Ben Stokes played an amazing innings, England's best," Stead stated, acknowledging the special display of skill. "That was pretty special to watch. I don't mind Ben Stokes. I'd rather he score them now than on October 5."
The ongoing series has been a seesaw battle, with England currently leading 2-1 after both teams split the T20 series 2-2.
Despite Stokes' dominance in the latest match, fast bowler Trent Boult's impressive performance since his return has been a positive sign for New Zealand. Boult, who took 5-51 in the same match, has shown his worth with crucial early wickets, including the dismissal of opener Jonny Bairstow for a duck and Joe Root for four, leaving England at 13 for two in the third over. However, Stokes and opener Dawid Malan (96) eventually took control with a 199-run partnership.
Boult has claimed eight wickets in the two matches of the ODI series since his return. Coach Stead praised Boult's contribution, stating, "It's great to have Trent back. He brings a lot of energy, a lot of skill. It's just a pity we haven't been able to capitalize on those starts."
Stead addressed the injury concern surrounding spin-bowling all-rounder Mitch Santner, who missed the recent match due to knee soreness resulting from a fielding mishap in the second ODI in Southampton.
While Santner underwent a knee scan, Stead shared positive news regarding the injury, stating that it's primarily due to swelling around the knee, which is thought to be a joint problem, rather than a more serious issue.
