New Zealand faces coronavirus outbreak after more than 100 days Covid-19 free

Coronavirus has broken out in New Zealand again after a 102-day streak of the country being Covid-19 free.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has imposed a temporary lockdown in Auckland - putting the city on alert level three.

It comes after four cases of the deadly virus were confirmed in the community there.

From Wednesday, people will be asked to stay at home, while restaurants and other businesses must close by midday so that health officials can "assess the situation".

Ms Ardern said: "We are asking people in Auckland to stay home to stop the spread. Act as if you have Covid, and as if the people around you have."

Other lockdown measures, which are reported to be imposed for three days, include encouraging workers to stay home unless they are essential workers, and a limit on gatherings of more than 10 people.

Travel into the city is also prohibited, unless it's an essential journey.

The rest of the country will be raised to alert level two - which means New Zealanders need to abide by the social distancing rule of two metres, among other measures.

Meanwhile, the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus around the world has hit 20 million.

However experts believe the true picture is much higher due to as many as 40 percent of people infected with Covid-19 showing no symptoms.
