New York Governor Pushes for Abortion Rights Ballot Measure

Governor Hochul condemns the Texas abortion ruling as a nightmare for women's rights.

New York Governor, Kathy Hochul, recently remarked on the controversial Texas abortion law and the Roe V Wade ruling. In reacting to its unfolding, she referred to this situation as the nightmare every woman had feared since the Dobbs decision, that it would go against half a century's worth of rights women fought so valiantly for. The Governor expressed her concern that these rights may no longer be available for future generations.

Explaining the legislative implications of this situation in New York, Hochul announced plans to put abortion rights on the state's ballot next November. This is a move to codify those rights in New York, despite the state not currently being under immediate threat from anti-abortion measures. According to her, codification is necessary due to potential dangers from unexpected electoral outcomes, which could see officials with anti-abortion views coming into power, who could then use their position to infringe on women's rights.

The governor also called on colleagues from other states to let women decide their own destinies by giving them a say via the ballot. She further lamented over the involvement of political elites, especially men, in making decisions that directly impact women's lives and health.

As for the idea that adding abortion to the ballot was mainly to boost voter turnout in the coming elections, Hochul stated that this decision was made long before the Dobbs decision and took two legislative cycles to materialize. She emphasized that New York aims to be a beacon of human rights, and invites women from states like Texas to move to a place that upholds and protects their freedoms.

Apart from women's rights, Hochul confirmed that New York is dedicated to defending a wide range of human rights, including those of the LGBTQ community and persons with disabilities. These rights will also be enshrined and secured against potential jeopardy from future governors, as per her administration's plans.

In conclusion, Governor Hochul asserts that upcoming election times provide another crucial opportunity for America to stand up for its foundational principles, and change the course of history. She emphasized that human rights should be respected, and decisions concerning women's bodies should be made by women themselves, free from interference from other parties.
