New York City Marathon live: Latest times, updates and results from Eliud Kipchoge’s farewell race

The New York City Marathon will bid farewell to Eliud Kipchoge as the former world record holder and two-time Olympic champion competes over the distance in an elite race for what is expected to be the final time.

Kipchoge, who turns 41 next week, made his debut in New York, finishing 17th to complete the seven-star set of world major marathons. At which point, the Kenyan has said he will embark on a “new journey” of “extreme” running challenges.

Hellen Obiri set a women's course record to win the New York City Marathon, while Benson Kipruto won the men's race by edging Alexander Mutiso by less than a second.

Obiri, who also won the race in 2023, finished in 2 hours, 19 minutes and 51 seconds. She was running with 2022 winner Sharon Lokedi until she pulled away from her countrymate in the final mile, surging ahead and winning easily, besting the previous course record of 2:22.31 set by Margaret Okayo in 2003. Defending champion Sheila Chepkirui finished third and all three beat the previous course best.

Kipruto and Mutiso separated themselves from the chase pack in the men's race heading into Mile 24. Kipruto seemed to have put the race away, pulling away from Mutiso in the last 200 meters. But Mutiso wasn't done, surging in the last 50 meters before just falling short. Kipruto finished in 2:08.09. Great Britain’s Patrick Dever was fourth overall, with the Preston Harrier in 02:08:58.

In the elite wheelchair races, Marcel Hug and Susannah Scaroni successfully defend their titles. Follow live updates and latest times and results from the New York City Marathon, below

New York City Marathon: Eliud Kipchoge crosses the line!

16:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Eliud Kipchoge competes the six-star set of major marathons by completing New York in a time of 02:14:36. The 40-year-old crosses the line in what may be his final marathon at the elite level before taking on new challenges. What a career it has been.

New York City Marathon: Patrick Dever finishes fourth!

16:16 , Jamie Braidwood

An incredible run from Great Britain’s Patrick Dever, fourth overall in 02:08:58! The Preston Harrier has truly announced himself in New York, remarkable.

New York City Marathon: Benson Kipruto wins men's race!

16:14 , Jamie Braidwood

OFF MY GOODNESS! It went down to the wire and this could be a photo finish! Benson Kipruto looks to have down it ahead of Alexander Mutiso, both both men crossed the line with their arms aloft!

But it goes to Kipruto, who adds New York to his victories in Boston, Chicago and Tokyo.

Kipruto is given the victory but both men have finished with the same time - 02:08:09.

A photo finish. Insane.

New York City Marathon: 800m left!

16:12 , Jamie Braidwood

Mutiso is lurking on Kipruto’s shoulder... this could be a sprint finish with 800m to go!

New York City Marathon: Men's race down to the wire

16:07 , Jamie Braidwood

We’re down to the final two kms of the elite men’s race and it will go down to the wire between Benson Kipruto and his Kenyan compatriot Alexander Mutiso!

Great Britain’s Patrick Dever, from Preston, is in with a shout of a top-five finish.

New York City Marathon: Hellen Obiri wins and breaks course record

15:55 , Jamie Braidwood

HUGE! Hellen Obiri breaks the 22-year New York Marathon course record with a brilliant final surge to take down Sharon Lokedi.

The 35-year-old Kenyan wins her second New York Marathon - but in a massive time of 02:19:51 (unofficial).

That takes minutes off Margaret Okayo’s 2003 record of 2:22:31.

Sharon Lokedi, who beat Obiri to win Boston, comes in second, 16 seconds behind Obiri.

Sheila Chepkiru was also within the old record, finishing with 2:20:24.

The USA’s Fiona O’Keefee and Annie Frisbie come in fourth and fifth - ahead of Sifan Hassan.

The Olympic champion dropped off and finished sixth in 02:24:43.

Great Britain’s Jessica Warner-Judd is seventh! She cracks the top-10 with a sub 02:25:00.

New York City Marathon: Obiri or Lokedi for the crown

15:52 , Jamie Braidwood

Its down to two! Will it be Obiri, the 2022 champion, or Lokedi, the 2021 champion.

Obiri breaks away with 800m to go!

New York City Marathon: Closing stages of women's race

15:47 , Jamie Braidwood

The final stretch in Central Park is tough - full of tricky sharp climbs and descents. Chepkiru has slipped off the front. Obiri and Lokedi are striking ahead. The course record, which has stood for 22 years, looks like it’s going to fall today.

New York City Marathon: Closing stages of women's race

15:42 , Jamie Braidwood

We reach the leafy edges of Central Park and this is anyone’s race between Chepkiru, Obiri and Lokedi - the three winners of the New York marathon in the past three years. Where will it go?

The men have got through 30km in 1:32:21, and Albert Korir is looking strong at the head of what remains a large leading pack.

New York City Marathon: Will we see a record time?

15:35 , Jamie Braidwood

Could Margaret Okayo’s 22-year-old record of 2:22:31 be under threat in New York? Chepkiru, Obiri and Lokedi have all won the New York marathon before and they are going to push for a history-making time over the final few kilometers, in perfect conditions.

New York City Marathon: Kipchoge slipping out of contention

15:30 , Jamie Braidwood

What a brilliant run this has been from Great Britain’s Patrick Dever - who is right there with the leading pack through the first two-thirds of the New York Marathon.

Albert Korir is looking strong, but I think Eliud Kipchoge may have fallen off the leading pack and is slipping out of contention.

Indeed, Kipchoge is now in the second pack - with Norway’s Moen and the defending champion Nageeye.

New York City Marathon:

15:23 , Jamie Braidwood

As if working together, Chepkiru, Obiri and Lokedi put their foot on the gas to seperate themselves from O’Keefe and Hassan again. Hassan has really dropped off, following a brutal uphill section. Into the final 10km or so.

New York City Marathon: Sifan Hassan battles back

15:16 , Jamie Braidwood

Never count out Sifan Hassan! The Olympic champion was at one stage 17 seconds off the lead but has reeled in the Kenyan trio, along with the sole American O’Keeffe.

Through 30km in 01:40:11. Heading into the closing stages in Manhattan.

New York City Marathon: Men reach halfway stage

15:14 , Jamie Braidwood

The men are not on course to threaten the New York record - a halfway split of 01:05:18.

It’s an interesting lead group, comprised of also Japan’s Yudai Fukuda and Norway’s Sondre Nordstad Moen as well as Alexnader Mutiso. But it’s still rather sprawling, with Kipchoge still there with Kori and Kipruto.

New York City Marathon: Movement in the women's race!

15:03 , Jamie Braidwood

A key moment in the women’s race as the leaders come off the Queensboro Bridge and cross into Manhattan. Sheila Chepkiru, Hellen Obiri and Sharon Lokedi have broken clear of Fiona O’Keefe, with Sifan Hassan a bit further behind. The Olympic champion is by no means out of this, but the three former winners and Kenyan trio of Chepkiru, Obiri and Lokedi have opened up some room.

New York City Marathon: Men's race taking shape

14:53 , Jamie Braidwood

So let’s run down the men’s contenders as we approach halfway, with the leading pack through 15km in 46:01.

We have the USA’s Hillary Bor, Kenya’s Benson Kipruto, Albert Korir and Abel Kipchumba, France’s Felix Bour and Great Britain’s Patrick Dever all going strong - but there are many more within touching distance, and we’ve yet to see a breakaway just yet.

Eliud Kipchoge is there too.

New York City Marathon: Women's race shaping up

14:49 , Jamie Braidwood

The elite women are through halfway in 01:11:01, with a six-strong pack opening up. That includes the last three winners, Sheila Chepkiru, Hellen Obiri and Sharon Lokedi, the Olympic champion Sifan Hassan, and the Americans Fiona O’Keefe and Annie Frisbie.

Susannah Scaroni wins women's wheelchair race at New York City Marathon

14:46 , Jamie Braidwood

Susannah Scaroni makes it back-to-back wins at the New York marathon with a dominant win on the streets of the Big Apple, coming home in 1:42:10. The American makes it three wins from four in New York - and improves a magnificent season that has also brought wins in Chicago, Boston and Sydney.

Marcel Hug wins men's wheelchair race at New York City Marathon

14:33 , Jamie Braidwood

The Silver Bullet strikes again! Marcel Hug extends his winning run at the majors with another dominant race - coming home in 1:30:16 to add his sixth consecutive victory at the majors. He’s won at Boston, London, Chicago and Sydney this year - and has now won New York.

Marcel Hug is closing in on victory in New York, with the Swiss over three minutes ahead of David Weir with just a few miles to go. Susannah Scaroni has an even greater lead over Catherine Debrunner in the women’s race.

New York City Marathon: Gotytom Gebreslase separated

14:17 , Jamie Braidwood

There’s a pack of around 13 of the elite women starting to form as they go through 10km in 33:53. Ethiopia’s Gotytom Gebreslase, the former world champion and winner in Berlin, is not among them.

New York City Marathon: Elite men's race underway

14:10 , Jamie Braidwood

Eliud Kipchoge begins his first New York City marathon as the elite men’s race and the open start gets underway! It would be a fairytale for Kipchoge to win his first race since Berlin in 2023 one week before he turns 41, and in what is expected to be his final elite marathon.

Fellow veteran Kenenisa Bekele, the third-fastest man in history, also lined up on the start line, as well as defending champion Abdi Nageeye, Olympic bronze medallist Benson Kipruto and Alexander Mutiso.

Eliud Kipchoge: Completing New York with cement my legacy

13:55 , Jamie Braidwood

“Chasing that Six Star will actually cement my legacy,” the former world record holder and two-time Olmypic champion said.

“It will make me a real marathoner all round. The Six Star has been my goal since I stepped in marathon.

“It takes time to do all the six, it takes patience, but patience pays.”

Marcel Hug opens up gap in men's wheelchair race

13:36 , Jamie Braidwood

Marcel Hug finished ahead of Great Britain’s David Weir to win the Chicago Marathon last month and the Swiss has opened up a 52-second lead over Weir through the first 10 miles in New York. The ‘Silver Bullet’, who owns the course record in New York, is starting to pull clear. Susannah Scaroni leads by a similar margin in the women’s elite wheelchair race.

Marcel Hug, aka ‘Silver Bullet’ is the favourite for the men’s wheelchair race, with the Swiss on a five-race win streak at major marathons. Hug has triumphed at Boston, London and Chicago this year - with the defending champion Daniel Romanchuk not lining up.

The American suffered a shoulder injury following a collision with a spectator at this year's Sydney marathon, which also ruled him out of last month’s Chicago marathon.

Olympic champion Sifan Hassan headlines the women’s race but will face competition from the last three winners of the race, the Kenyan trio of Sheila Chepkiru, Hellen Obiri, Sharon Lokedi, and Ethiopia’s Gotytom Gebreslase.

“Ladies, I’m scared of you,” Hassan said when asked about the competition ahead of the racee. “[Sharon] Lokedi and [Hellen] Obiri, they already did this course and are very strong women. They are very tough. Especially Obiri. She’s a beast.”

Eliud Kipchoge reveals crazy new challenge after final major marathon in New York

11:10 , Jamie Braidwood

Eliud Kipchoge has revealed that he intends to step away from elite-level marathon running after the New York City Marathon in November to pursue other projects — including a challenge in Antarctica.

The 40-year-old Kenyan has run four of the 10 fastest marathons in history, and became the first man to break the two-hour barrier in an unofficial record attempt in Vienna in 2019.

Kipchoge has won 11 times on the World Major Marathon circuit alongside two Olympic golds in the 26.2-mile distance, though is yet to compete in New York during his career.

Good morning

11:00 , Jamie Braidwood

The New York City Marathon 2025 welcomes a star-studded field headlined by Olympic and marathon major champions including Eliud Kipchoge and Sifan Hassan.

In a course debut for both the Kenyan and Dutch athletes, the 26.2 mile race is set up for a fascinating battle through the five boroughs of New York City.

It brings a close to marathon majors season, too, fresh off the back of Jacob Kiplimo and Hawi Feysa’s victories in Chicago, and Sabastian Sawe’s storming win in Berlin after leading an unprecedented anti-doping scheme with the AIU and Adidas.

The sport suffered a blow, though, when official women’s world record holder Ruth Chepng’etich was handed a three-year ban for doping.
