New steak spot and bar headed to Sale’s former Food Hall

A new restaurant specialising in steak is heading to the unit vacated by the Sale Food Hall. Part of the Stanley Square redevelopment, Canteena Bar and Grill is a new project from Danielle Condron and Lisa Kettle, who were previously running The Bridge pub in Sale, and No 1 Canal Street in the village.

It will serve up Irish Dexter and Brazilian steak, as well as vegan and vegetarian dishes. Splitting the unit into two, there will be a restaurant and a bar area, with plans for set three course menu on Thursdays.

Danielle said: “We love Sale and its community and wanted to make sure everyone can enjoy the incredible food and new cosy, contemporary feel at Canteena.

“We have worked hard to cover every price range when it comes to the menu. We want Canteena to be Sale’s home away from home when it comes to sharing food and drink with the people closest to you.”

The Food Hall, part of the Store Group which has General Stores in Stretford, Ancoats, Media City and Deansgate Square, had been the cornerstone of the Stanley Square development. It featured a General Store shop, a bar and rotating food traders.

Despite its popularity, it sadly announced its closure in March this year, citing ‘unprecedented cost increases’.

"We share this news with a heavy heart,” it said. “It is really tough at the moment for hospitality businesses, independent businesses, retailers, makers - everyone really! We know that you, our guests and followers, are feeling it too and we’re sorry that we couldn’t keep serving you in Sale.

"As one of the first independent businesses to arrive in Stanley Square, it’s been wonderful to be a part of the journey of the town so far. We have become so invested - it’s tough to let it go but we have not been able to find a way forward. Rising costs, especially in terms of power, have proved insurmountable for us here in Sale. We take with us warm memories of Groceries & Beer and witnessing the transformation of the mall!”

Also heading to Stanley Square will be a new site for The Oyster Catcher. Having run its first restaurant in Chorlton, it will be bringing its fish-focused menu to Sale.

Co-owner Duncan Ranyard said: “Our restaurant in Chorlton has proved very popular over the last five years, with lots of guests travelling from Sale and further afield to dine with us. We have loved sharing our offering with the people of Chorlton and when we were asked to become part of the exciting new development in Stanley Square we jumped at the chance.”

Meanwhile, new bar Pray Tell will be moving into the unit formerly run as craft beer spot Draft.

Mark Rebbeck, director of Altered Space, which is behind the Stanley Square redevelopment, said: "We are pleased to see so many new and vibrant businesses open their doors in Sale. We always saw the potential of this town centre, and it's great to see others now share that outlook with us."
