New speed cameras spotted on the A470 are now live

The new speed cameras on the A470 are now operational, the Welsh Government has finally confirmed.

Average speed cameras have been installed on the A470 between the Upper Boat and Bridge Street Interchange, Pontypridd.

Officials said the cameras are to make sure drivers stick to the 50mph limit with the slower speed resulting hopefully reducing nitrogen oxide (NO2) levels.

The cameras were put in place at the end of August however they were not fully operational until Monday, September 16.

Motorists said they had made a noticeable difference to people's driving habits.

Others have expressed anger at the measures branding it a "money making exercise".

Twitter user Ceri Evs wrote: "We won’t be able to walk before long without getting fined."

Last month additional cameras were installed between junctions 41 and 42 of the M4 near Port Talbot .

A previous report by the Welsh Government claimed that speed restrictions "are the only measure" that will cut NO2 emissions "as soon as possible".

A spokeswoman for the Welsh Government, said: "An average speed camera system has recently been installed on the A470 between the Upper Boat Interchange and the Bridge Street Interchange in Pontypridd.

"The system comprises of several cameras which are currently live and monitoring traffic speeds. The cameras have been provided with green coloured shields to represent the fact they are monitoring a 50mph speed limit to help reduce emissions."
