New RTE Director General vows Ryan Tubridy will not be out of his job

RTE boss Kevin Bakhurst has revealed Ryan Tubridy will not be out of a job by Friday after the former Late Late Show presenter said it multiple times yesterday.

The new director general, who officially started in his new role on Monday, also said he felt “sorry” for Tubridy but stressed a decision on his future would be made in weeks.

Speaking to NewsTalk yesterday, he said: “He’s wrong about this week. He won’t be out of a job by the end of this week. This is a big decision for me and for RTE and it needs to be properly considered and look we might need a little of bit of time.

“I don’t want it to be too long because it’s not fair to Ryan and it’s not fair to RTE. But I want to talk to staff. I want to talk to my new leadership team.

"This is a serious decision for RTE and I want to be fair and I want to make the right decision, I want to make the right decision for audiences and for RTE.”

When he was pressed on when we will know if Mr Tubridy would be back on his radio show, Bakhurst said: “I suspect it will be a matter of a couple of weeks probably.”

Mr Bakhurst, above, added: “I don’t like seeing any individuals put into this kind of position with a reputation that they’ve built up over many years being questioned and under threat.

“I always thought he was a very talented broadcaster. I have to accept what Ryan says.

“I actually feel sorry for Ryan that he is being put in this position to be brutally honest.”
