New restaurant opens on Park Street serving authentic Asian street food

A new restaurant has opened in Bristol city centre serving authentic Asian dishes including dim sum, noodles and Chinese roast duck.

Headed up by the family who own the Little Chinatown complex in Nelson Street, Sai Kung Cafe also serves bubble tea and award-winning Yee Kwan ice cream, which won investment from Deborah Meaden on hit BBC show Dragons' Den.

Replacing former frozen yoghurt shop Flavalanche in Park Street, it opened in March before having to close just days later when the lockdown was announced - but owner George Lai is delighted to be up and running again.

"It feels great to be open and welcoming customers again," said the 50-year-old. "Having to close so soon after opening was cruel but we're starting to build up a loyal following now.

"There aren't many places in Bristol that serve dim sum, a dish traditionally favoured by many as it's steamed and therefore healthier.

"We have really experienced and established chefs in the kitchen who have worked at some top restaurants and know how to make the dish to perfection, as well as other popular dishes."

George's family also own the 168 Oriental supermarket which neighbours Sai Kung on Park Street, as well as the long-running and highly-rated China Garden restaurant in Exmouth, Devon.

Sai Kung is the name of the small town in Hong Kong where George's family are from.

"With 168 Oriental located next to our new Sai Kung restaurant, we hope it can be something similar to what we have in Nelson Street, where people can have a delicious bite to eat before doing their shopping," added George.

The family's other Bristol restaurant will reopen in August.

More information about Sai Kung can be found on its Facebook page.
