New Rays outfielder Tommy Pham sidelined with fractured foot

Rays OF Tommy Pham, acquired Tuesday from St. Louis, will be sidelined likely into September with a fractured right foot.

Pham was hit by a pitch in his fourth-inning at-bat on Thursday, his second game with the Rays. He stayed in, and ended up scoring on a wild pitch, but left the game in the seventh.

The Rays said after the game X-rays were negative, that Pham sustained only a bruise and could play Friday. But further testing Friday showed the fracture, and he seems likely to be sidelined for close to a month.

The Rays initial move was to add an arm to the bullpen, calling up left-hander Adam Kolarek. Pham's injury could accelerate plans to promote outfielder Austin Meadows, who was acquired from the Pirates as part of the Chris Archer deal and initially assigned to Triple-A Durham.

The Rays acquired Pham for three prospects _ outfielder Justin Williams, left-hander Genesis Cabrera and right-hander Roel Ramirez.
