New public art walking tour launched in Enniskillen

A new public art walking tour in Enniskillen has received a warm response since it began in recent weeks.

The Walk Walk, Talk, Talk tours have been set up by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, and aims to bring untold stories of the Co Fermanagh town to life.

Recently completed public realm art works form the basis of the tour delivered by Enniskillen Castle development officer Catherine Scott.

The tour explores the old and the new of Enniskillen, from street art and street names to artists and architecture.

“Every day whether people are on the tour or not these pieces are here to be seen,” Catherine said.

“The one thing everybody knows about Enniskillen is that it’s Ireland’s only island town and that has to be celebrated.

“By doing trails like this and different projects, if we are able to familiarise people with their environment, theory landscape, with the world that is around them then they feel very much a sense of ownership of it, a sense of belonging.

“In many ways for a small market town as it was from its inception as a plantation town, it has always been an important town.

“People feel a very strong sense of pride in coming from and living in Enniskillen."

Catherine added that the plaques now seen around the town have generated interest from locals and residents.

As well as the public realm art works, a number of murals have been painted by local artists and commissioned by Enniskillen BID to show off the town’s heritage.

“It’s lovely to see people looking at them and wondering what it’s about,” she said.

“Once they are looking at it and established an interest then they will want to know more.

“They are all subtle nods to various historical elements of the history of the town.

“The murals are not strictly part of the tour but they are very much part of the landscape of the town now. They reflect the natural heritage of Fermanagh.”
