New mum sets up West Bridgford support group for parents and babies

A new mum wants to help parents suffering through perinatal depression as part of a series of classes in West Bridgford.

Kelly Sumner, 39, of Ruddington, who has a 19-week-old baby, Jaxon, said it can be tough for new mothers who might not have any support around them.

She said after hearing that more and more women were suffering with mental health problems after the birth of their new baby, she decided it was time for action.

Now the sessions will launch on May 22, from 10am to noon, at The Botanist.

She said: "From having my own little boy I realised there was no support out there once you are signed off by your health visitor and midwife.

"Dad might be at work and mums might be on their own. It could be a new mum who hasn't got out the house and does not know what is out there.

"The baby might be sick on you or need a feed. It might be simple but it can send you off and can be hard and they need the confidence.

"I think perinatal mental health problems are more common than you think. It is happening more often. There are mums out there struggling who need support."

She has just launched a Facebook group called Mummy Meet and already is getting quite a following. She hopes in the future that she will set up another group for the dads.

She added: "From my own experience of attending groups with my little one I  realised there are not enough supportive groups out there for new mums.

"I have started up a mum and baby group starting in West Bridgford, hopefully branching out into Arnold and Long Eaton.

"It will be a supportive group for new mums to meet new friends and build a supportive network following their child’s birth.

"I created the group on Facebook and already have 130 members in just over two weeks.

"I am intending to do monthly meets for dads to come and do activities with their babies and meet other dads. I don’t think there is anything out there for them."

NHS England said: "Perinatal mental health problems are those which occur during pregnancy or in the first year following the birth of a child.

"Perinatal mental illness affects up to 20 percent of women, and covers a wide range of conditions.

"If left untreated, it can have significant and long lasting effects on the woman and her family.

"Perinatal mental health problems can also have long-standing effects on children’s emotional, social and cognitive development."
