New Motherwell boss Graham Alexander believes Scottish football is disrespected in England

New Motherwell manager Graham Alexander insists that Scottish football is disrespected south of the border.

Alexander replaces former teammate Stephen Robinson to become the Steelman's 25th manager in their history.

Although the 49 year-old was capped 40 times for Scotland, his entire playing career was spent in England.

And Motherwell's match against St Mirren on Saturday will be his first taste of domestic football in Scotland, as he bids to guide the stuttering Steelmen away from the bottom end of the Scottish Premiership table.

The Preston North End legend was sacked by ambitious Salford City in October despite an unbeaten start to the League Two season.

Alexander previously enjoyed success as a manager at Fleetwood Town and Scunthorpe but he is looking forward to testing himself in a league that he believes doesn’t get the respect it deserves.

Alexander said: “Because I’ve been in based in England for thirty years, I think there is a misconception about Scottish football.

"I know the standard is very good.

“I know what it is because I played for Scotland and have friends who are still playing or managing in Scotland.

"I want to test myself against these managers and clubs, go to different grounds that I’ve not been and to compete against different people.

“There’s a lot of quality in Scotland both on the coaching side and playing side, I want to see what quality we can produce as a club.”
