New Kiln Theatre season to feature an RSC transfer and Paapa Essiedu as Moses

Kiln Theatre artistic director Indhu Rubasingham has announced three new productions to be staged next year.

Star of the RSC’s Hamlet Paapa Essiedu will take on another seminal male role as Moses in New York playwright Antoinette Nwandu’s Pass Over. The poetry-infused new play inspired by the Exodus and Waiting for Godot follows young men as they experience a world that refuses to see them.

Rubasingham said the play is “a timely, powerful piece of writing”. Blues in the Night designer Robert Jones will return to the Kiln to design this production in the round, a first for this theatre.

RSC deputy artistic director Erica Whyman will helm a co-production of Hannah Khalil’s A Museum in Baghdad, which explores two women living decades apart, who both take on the task of running a museum at times of unrest. The play will first run at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon.

To finish the newly announced works, a revival of Richard Cameron’s comedy The Glee Club will return to the summer of 1962, when members of a miners’ glee club are preparing to perform at their local gala. Kate Wasserberg will direct the play.

Casting for these two plays is yet to be announced.

“Since we re-opened we have put new work at the centre of our programming," Rubasingham said. "This season continues to amplify unheard voices which speak to our times; whether it’s the young African American male in this time of Black Lives Matter or the idea of 'Culture', who owns it and who appropriates it in the Middle East, or the voice of the white working class community in the North of England. This work together reflects the connectivity and humanity of our diverse communities”

These three plays join the previously announced Snowflake by Mike Bartlett, which will open at the end of this year. More information and tickets at kilntheatre.com
