A high-speed jetfoil, the first one built domestically in 25 years, made its appearance in Tokyo Bay on Thursday.
The vessel replaces an aging one run by Tokai Kisen Co., a Tokyo-based ferry operator that travels a route connecting Takeshiba Pier in Minato Ward, Tokyo, with the Izu Islands.
Its jet engine uses seawater to propel the vessel forward, and its hydrofoil wings allow the hull to rise above the water surface. These features lessen water resistance and allow the vessel to travel smoothly at about 80 kph.
Named Seven Islands Yui, the jetfoil was painted indigo so its beauty stands out as it travels to the Izu Islands. Its service will begin on July 13, connecting Takeshiba Pier to the Izu Islands, with taking 1 hour and 45 minutes at the fastest.
