U.S. President Donald Trump is likely to be the first foreign leader to meet with the new emperor after the crown prince's enthronement on May 1, 2019, a government source has said.
According to the source, the government has been making arrangements to receive Trump as a state guest sometime from May 1 to before June 28-29, when a summit meeting of the Group of 20 major economies will take place in Osaka.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe plans to hold a summit with Trump during his visit to Japan to discuss such matters as the North Korean situation and Japan-U.S. trade issues.
Trump is also set to attend the G20 summit in Osaka, during which he plans to again hold talks with Abe.
It would be unusual for a U.S. president to visit Japan twice in such a short period of time.
At a Japan-U.S. summit held in Buenos Aires on Nov. 30, Trump said, "I was very honored to be invited" to Japan. He also said he is looking forward to experiencing an event related to the Emperor, showing his interest in making a visit to Japan when ceremonies associated with the Imperial family are set to be held.
