New Gruffalo 50p coin revealed and it includes Mouse

The new Gruffalo 50p coin has been revealed and this time he has brought a friend.

The fearless mouse who successfully tricked the owl, snake and fox into believing he was a scary predator will finally appear on a coin alongside the Gruffalo himself.

The Royal Mint has revealed the design for the second Gruffalo coin after tens of thousands applied to get their hands on the first design last year.

It says: "Whether your favourite is the little brown mouse or the Gruffalo himself, the new 50p coin from our childhood characters range is perfect for fans of the famous picture book."

The coin will be available in three editions; a gold proof coin, a silver proof coin and an uncirculated coin that uses different presses from standard 50p pieces for a more polished finish.

However, fans will not be able to get their hands on the coin from banks or shops. The uncirculated coin will be priced at £10 and will be available as a collector's item only.

The Royal Mint will also sell a Gruffalo gift set featuring the coin and a special edition of the book to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

The release of the Gruffalo coin follows an announcement that Royal Mint will be producing a Wallace and Gromit-themed coin based on the popular claymation figures.

Other characters that have been given the 'Royal Mint treatment' include The Snowman and Mrs Tittlemouse, Peter Rabbit and more from esteemed author Beatrix Potter.
