New Greater Manchester bars and restaurants to try in February 2020

January is finally behind us, and the city is beginning to wake up from its Dry January hibernation.

It's not just the diners who are stretching out their weary limbs and heading to the pub - the restaurant scene is livening up too.

This month alone, Manchester is set to welcome an enormous gourmet doner kebab house, an intimate suburban curry house, a hidden gin distillery and bar, and a luxury new hotel complete with 'Big Apple'-inspired menu.

And that's just for starters.

Here are the best openings across Greater Manchester for you to check out this February.

Project Halcyon, Manchester city centre

(Manchester Evening News)

Brought to you by the team behind Zymurgorium gin, this new distillery and cocktail bar is tucked in the Old Granada Studios site.

The 'mob chic' bar is styled on the illicit warehouse speakeasies of prohibition-era Chicago.

You'll find an absinthe salon inside, a micro distillery, a photo booth designed to look like a torture chamber (complete with blood splatters on the printed photographs), and a classroom where visitors can make their own gin.

There's even a store-and-pour set-up, where you can buy your own bottle of booze and leave it under lock and key ready for your next visit.

Doner Haus, Manchester city centre

Doner Haus in Glasgow (Facebook - Doner Haus)

Stepping into the Corn Exchange unit formerly occupied by Bryon Burger, Doner Haus aims to bring a little taste of Berlin to the city.

The huge new restaurant will have 180 covers, spread over four different areas including an outside terrace area.

It will serve Berlin-style quality kebabs, served on sourdough flatbreads, Turkish pidas or kohbez dürüm and topped with fresh salad and herbs, as well as currywurst, falafel, halloumi and vegan schnitzels.

It's the second site for Doner Haus, which is already up and running in Glasgow.

The Good Rebel, Stockport

The Good Rebel in Stockport (Martin Healy)

Another addition to the bustling bar and restaurant scene of Stockport's Old Town, The Good Rebel is situated on Mealhouse Brow, just off the Market Place.

The venue is being launched by Martin Healy, who brings with him 10 years of bar management experience at chains including Turtle Bay and The Slug & Lettuce.

The bar will have space for around 80 people inside, with a 'cinematic' look decorated in yellow and white with accents of red.

It will specialise in cocktails, including a chocolate espresso martini made with Belgian creme de cacao, which will be served alongside a range of European lagers and beers, and a selection of wines.

Promising 'much-loved British classics with a sprinkling of Big Apple swagger', Runyon's is named after American writer Damon Runyon.

You can expect US and European dishes such as crab flake a la newberg and bacon fried rice.

It's all part of Hotel Brooklyn, the latest luxury hotel opening from the people behind Hotel Gotham.

The new, 189-room hotel, has taken inspiration from the hip New York borough and its parallels with Manchester.

Hitchki, Cheadle

Cheadle's latest Indian restaurant is being launched by the team behind Hazel Grove's popular Copper Lounge.

It serves a menu of small plates drawn from Indian street food dishes, many of which are vegetarian or vegan.

Tapioca pearl patties, potato-stuffed chillis and beetroot tikki are among the plant-based options.

There's also plenty of meat and fish dishes, including Goan crab cutlets, Indo-Chinese chilli chicken, and Kashmiri lamb chops.

The evening menu is served from 4.30pm to 10pm, and there's a shorter lunch menu served from 11am to 2pm.

That's Thai, Oldham

Inside That's Thai Oldham (Publicity Picture)

A tiny Thai restaurant with a huge following, That's Thai was so inundated with visitors to its backstreet Strangeways site that it's now opened a second, in Oldham

The family-operated cafe, which received a rave review from the M.E.N. last year, has just opened a new spot near the Derker tram stop, with space for up to 12 dine-in customers.

Inside, the walls are covered in photographs of Thailand, from the Wat Arun temple in Bangkok to the turquoise blue waters of Maya Bay.

The menu remains much the same - diners can expect stir fries, curries and noodle dishes with prices usually around £7 for a main, to eat in or take away.

Herd, Northern Quarter

Partnering with Dale Street's gin bar Allotment is a brand new steak offering for the Northern Quarter.

Herd will add a cosy restaurant area inside the bar, serving 30-day-aged steaks and meat sourced from Butcher's Quarter around the corner.

You'll find braised beef cheeks, sticky baby back rips, pan-roasted chicken supreme and a huge Herd burger.

And although very definitely not geared towards vegetarians, there are a couple of meat-free options, such as a beetroot Wellington.
