A MAJOR airline has launched new direct flights from Glasgow Airport to a “key European hub” best known for its stunning landscape and historic architecture.

Glasgow Airport welcomed the inaugural Edelweiss flight from Zurich, marking the official launch of a brand-new direct service between Scotland and Switzerland.

The first flight of the new route touched down on Scottish soil on Friday, with the twice-weekly connection operating every Monday and Friday until September 14.

According to the airport’s bosses, the new route will provide Scottish holidaymakers with a “convenient, direct link” to Switzerland’s largest city, which is also considered a key European hub.

Zurich is best known for its blend of “lakeside beauty and historic charm” along with easy access to the Swiss Alps, making it a popular destination for both short breaks and longer leisure trips.

Located in the northwestern tip of Lake Zurich, the city’s pre-medieval Old Town is framed by picturesque mountain views featuring several historical landmarks, including the twin-towered Grossmunster church.

The city’s airport is the largest in Switzerland and is located just 10 minutes away from Zurich’s city centre.

Chris Tibbett, executive director of commercial aviation and marketing, said he is proud to celebrate the successful launch of the new route after the arrival of Edelweiss’s first flight from Zurich.

He said: “It’s fantastic to see this service take off, providing our passengers with a direct link to one of Europe’s most popular destinations.

“Zurich is not only a vibrant city in its own right but also an important gateway to the wider Swiss network and beyond. This new connection further strengthens our partnership with the Lufthansa Group while enhancing choice and connectivity for travellers across Scotland.

“We look forward to seeing the route perform strongly throughout the summer and to welcoming many visitors from Switzerland to Glasgow.”

Bosses at Glasgow Airport added that the new service also “strengthens inbound tourism opportunities”, with Swiss travellers also being offered the opportunity to explore Scotland.
