New European Super League format pitched with major effect on Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham

European Super League organisers, A22, have ramped up efforts to create a breakaway competition once more as a new format is put forward. It was revealed on Thursday in papers across Europe that the three remaining founder sides, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus, are pushing for the league once more.

It comes after Premier League sides dominated the transfer spending across Europe. Chelsea alone spent more than the other top four leagues combined and accounted for nearly 50% of England's outlay.

Greater financial equality is at the forefront of the proposals which Madrid, Barcelona and Juve are behind in a bid to reduce the chasm between England and the rest of Europe due to TV deals and the ever-growing transfer market.

There is also an ongoing battle between the three supergiants with UEFA as they attempt to prove the illegality of a monopoly on European club football, though that was dealt a blow over Christmas. The advocate-general Athanasios Rantos advised the courts that current EU competition law aligned with the objectives of FIFA and UEFA for footballing restrictions on competitions.

The latest efforts to form this Super League comes with a change of structure though and a major revamp. Whereas the initial breakaway in April 2021 had a set group of 12 teams with no promotion or relegation, the latest prospect has reportedly been pitched to more than 50 clubs across the continent.

Although the details are yet to be explained it is said that it would be a multi-divisional competition with no permanent members and at least 14 games per club, per season. Madrid president Florentino Perez has also continued to take the stance that any system would provide solidarity and payments to those clubs not in the competition.
