New driving rules that everyone should know as Highway Code print version updated

The new print version of The Highway Code has been updated to include recent changes and is available to buy in shops and online.

This comes as a number of new driving rules were enforced this year which includes regulations on self-driving vehicles, the hand-held mobile rules change and alterations to sentencing for driving-related offences.

One of the most major new rules enforced was the change of priority. Pedestrians now have priority at junctions, cyclists now have priority on roundabouts and they should slow down in spaces shared with pedestrians.

Along with that, motorists have also been told to leave at least 1.5 metres when overtaking cyclists and two metres for horse riders. It is also now a requirement for cyclists to ride in the middle of their lane.

Mobile phone

As reported by Nottinghamshire Live, this year, the rules surrounding using your mobile phone when in the car has tightened. It is now illegal for motorists in the UK to use their mobiles at any time during a journey, this includes changing music or texting.

Anyone caught using their phone for any reason, unless in an emergency, will receive a £200 fine and six points on their licence. Meanwhile, new drivers who only passed their test within two years could lose their licence completely.

Low Emission Zones

Back in May, Glasgow Low Emission Zones Glasgow introduced its Low Emission Zone and is set to enforce it legally from June, following a one-year grace period. From then, if caught driving in a vehicle that doesn't meet the low emission standards, they could face a £480 fine.

Taking goods to Europe

As the UK have left the EU, UK drivers now need a licence to carry good or people if they are transporting for hire or reward – such as shared-cost group minibus trips – into the EU or Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

The standard international goods vehicle licence will be required for light good vehicles, vans, and cars/vans towing trailers.

The full version of The Highway Code is available, free of charge, on GOV.UK. The new Highway Code also appears in the Official DVSA Theory Test Kit app, available from the App Store and Google Play.

The Highway Code, which was first published in 1931, is collated information, advice, guides and mandatory rules for road users in the UK. Its objective is to promote road safety for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and any other road users.
