New Covid-19 testing site set to open in Renfrew this week

A new Covid-19 testing site will open in Renfrew later this week.

The walk-through local test site in the car park at Charles Avenue will offer will offer PCR tests for people who have symptoms of Covid-19 or who have been required to get a PCR test.

Renfrewshire Council confirmed yesterday the new site would open on Friday, with the site build commencing tomorrow.

The construction of the site will result in a loss of 22 spaces in the busy car park - which is located near to Renfrew High Street.

However, the council confirmed that 80 spaces will still be available for use.

It will also take out two of the four electric vehicle charging points, however other charging points are available nearby at Renfrew Leisure Centre, KGV and Braehead shopping complex.

In a post on social media, a Renfrewshire Council spokesperson said: "It will work like the one at Bridge Street in Paisley – it will be run by contractors on behalf of the UK Government and you can book a test via the UK Government website.

"Local Test Sites usually go in built-up areas such as town centres – to make it easier for people who don’t have a car to access testing.

"Strict health and safety procedures will be in place at the site. The site itself will be fenced off and everyone attending or working there will be required to wear a face covering at all times."

This site was previously used as a pop up vaccination centre earlier this year following a spike in cases in the Renfrew area.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde set up the vaccination site in June this year with the aim of providing up to 1,000 vaccines for anyone in the Renfrew area who had not yet been vaccinated.

There are currently two other testing sites in Renfrewshire - Glasgow Airport which is a drive through site, and Bridge Street in Paisley which is a walk through site.

The bus offers lateral flow tests for people without symptoms of the virus.

There's no need to book, and members of the public can come in to take a test, or collect boxes of lateral-flow kits to take home.

The bus will be at County Square, Paisley tomorrow and West College Scotland campus, Renfrew Road on Thursday from 10.30am to 4pm.
