List shows who will get new coronavirus vaccine first once its released in UK

Health chiefs have revealed which groups of people will be prioritised for coronavirus vaccines once they are rolled out across the nation.

Public Health England has published a new interim list with a proposed rundown of who would be given the jabs first.

Care home residents and staff are at the top of the list.

Anyone aged 80 and over, care workers and NHS staff are next followed by people aged 75 and over.

People aged over 70, and all adults who are classed as "clinically extremely vulnerable" are fourth on the list.

Fifth will be people aged over 65 with all adults in "at-risk" groups next.

After that everyone aged 60 and over are next, then those 55 and over.

Anyone over the age of 50 is ninth in the list followed by the wider population.

However it has emerged that the list could be tweaked depending on the logistics of storing the first vaccine which is available.

The government’s joint committee on vaccination and immunisation is due to publish an updated version next week.

The Pfizer/BioNtech jab is currently the only one being assessed by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

But it has to be stored at -70C, has a shelf life of just five days and it is believed that it can't be moved more than four times before rendering it less effective.

This means it could be given to NHS workers first while plans for moving it into care homes are finalised.

If approved by MHRA the vaccine's production plant in Belgium will move it to storage hubs in Britain and then it will be moved on to hospitals.

The news comes as it emerged doctors at more than 1,000 GP sites being set up to administer the programme have been told the first doses could be available in nine days if it is approved.

The Government has ordered more than 350 million doses of vaccines, including 40 million from Pfizer/BioNtech.

It is hoped five million will be delivered in time for Christmas.

This morning Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced he has appointed Tory minister Nadhim Zahawi to oversee the deployment of the coronavirus vaccine.
