Algeria reported on Saturday 189 new coronavirus cases, raising the country’s total to 5,558.

It registered six fatalities, taking the toll to 494.

Seventy-nine patients have recovered, taking the count to 2,545.

Morocco reported 162 new infections, increasing its total to 5,873.

The country has confirmed 189 deaths and 2,389 recoveries.

More cases in Jordan, Lebanon

Jordan, which had reported no new infections for days, confirmed 14 new cases.

Its count now stands at 522.

Health Minister Saad Jaber said six of the new cases were reported among truck drivers. A foreign diplomat arriving from abroad also tested positive for the virus.

The remaining cases contracted the disease after coming in contact with other patients.

Two patients have recovered, taking the total to 392.

In the neighboring Palestinian territories, the government said no new coronavirus cases were reported, while 39 patients have recovered.

Lebanon, meanwhile, reported 16 new cases, raising its count to 809.

The virus was detected among two people returning from abroad, days after Prime Minister Hassan Diab had warned of a second wave of infections if people failed to respect preventive measures.

The government started to ease some restrictions this week, allowing restaurants to open but at only 30% of capacity.

It formally extended the shutdown until May 24 on Tuesday.

Economic activity would still be allowed to resume gradually under a previously defined time frame. The security forces and army would be asked to act strictly to prevent violations.
