New Control games going well at Remedy, due 2023-2025

Just when you think the financial reports are done, another rolls around. Remedy, developers of Max Payne, Alan Wake, and Control, have put their results and plans forward for another year. Short version: things are going pretty good and they’ll keep going great when the games come out over the next three years. Alan Wake 2, Max Payne remastered, a Control spin-off, and a “bigger Control game” are all proceeding apace.

So speaks CEO Tero Virtala in the earnings report. Development costs were actually down versus the final quarter of last year, as were royalties as the drop-off from Control continues. However, Virtala reports that they have multiple years of development contracts on the go with various partners, securing their future. He hopes that royalties will bring a surprise boost to that.

Very little mention is made of the release of Crossfire HD and Crossfire X, for which Remedy developed the single-player. Originally exciting as a western port of one of the most-played FPS games in Asia, it was absolutely slaughtered in reviews and by players. Much of this came for the pay-to-win multiplayer, but the single-player didn’t set anyone’s heart alight either.

In better news, all their development projects are going well, including Alan Wake 2 and two Control games. While neither is specifically called out as a sequel, there is a larger one as well as a spin-off. Virtala mentions multiple times that they expect to release games between 2023 and 2025, so we’ll be waiting until then for these.
