A new born baby has been found abandoned in an Oxford hospital toilet.

An appeal has been launched to trace the mother of the child, who was discovered by staff at the John Radcliffe Hospital on Monday afternoon.

Concerns have been raised over the mother's health, and she has been urged to seek medical attention.

A statement from Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Thames Valley Police said the baby boy was believed to have been born at around 6pm.

He is being cared for by medics at the hospital.

Sam Foster, chief nurse of Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: "I am appealing directly to the baby's mother to please come forward to seek medical attention.

"Childbirth is a very emotional process, from a physical perspective you will need our medical and midwifery team to check that there are no complications from you giving birth.

"Here at the hospital we have midwives and doctors to give you the care you need and reunite you with your baby boy.

"Please urgently call 01865 740429 to speak to one of the midwives at the hospital who can give you the care you need.

"Or contact 999 and ask to speak to the ambulance service."

Anyone else with information, who may have seen a distressed woman leaving the hospital some time after 6pm on Monday, should call Thames Valley Police on 101 quoting reference 1209 18/3/19.
