New bar could open in Durham city centre on site of former Coral betting shop

A former betting shop could be transformed into a bar under new plans submitted to Durham County Council.

Earlier this year, a 'change of use' bid was lodged for the ex-Coral betting Shop in 66 Saddler Street, Durham City.

Applicant Holmwood Commercial Properties Ltd has applied for a restaurant /cafe/ bar use for the vacant retail space.

While the building is not listed, it is based in a conservation area and seen as a "non-designated heritage asset".

A heritage statement, submitted on behalf of the applicant, states the space has been in used as a restaurant for many years in the upper floors of the building.

It reads: "Whilst 66 Saddler Street is a heritage asset, the extent of the fabric that contributes to its heritage significance is essentially limited to the features that contribute to the facade frontage of Saddler Street and in turn contribute to the sense of place that sets Durham City as a World Heritage site.

"Within the property there are some internal features, particularly some of the doors and the plaster work behind the current Coral partitions and fit out, that are worthy of preservation."

Plans include removing internal walls and installing a new extraction system for a kitchen area on the ground floor.

However, the applicant states that layout drawings are "indicative" and could change based on the needs of the new tenant.

Public comments are open on the application until June 5 with a final decision expected by July 10.
