New Ayrshire flood risk warning issued as rain and thunderstorms head to region

Ayrshire could be hit with more heavy rain today and into the weekend, experts have warned.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the region and most of Scotland from today right through until Sunday.

A thunderstorm warning is in place from midnight tonight until 6am on Sunday.

The warning comes after many part of East Ayrshire have been badly hit with flash flooding in the past 10 days.

The warning reads: "A band of heavy rain, with the possibility of some very heavy bursts, will move northwards during Thursday night and Friday

"Within this band 10-15 mm is widely expected, however some places could see as much as 30 mm in just a few hours.

"Some parts of northern and eastern Scotland may see 40-60mm of rain during this period.

"The rain will also be accompanied by strong winds, with gusts of 40-50mph possible across parts of Northern Ireland and western Scotland during Friday.

"Once the rain has cleared scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop.

"Many places will miss these, but where they do occur 10-20 mm is possible in one hour, with perhaps 30 mm in a few hours."

On the thunderstorm warning, the Met Office said: "Slow-moving heavy, thundery showers on Saturday may produce some torrential downpours which could cause disruption to travel and flooding.

"There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater or lightning strikes.

"Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

"There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.

"Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

"There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater and there is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads."
