Everton fans are split over rumours that David Moyes is set to replace Marco Silva as manager even if a different Scot will take charge against Chelsea on December 7.
Goodison Park will host Frank Lampard's side with the Toffees needing a result to escape the relegation zone with only 14 points from 15 games.
Ex-striker Duncan Ferguson has been installed as caretaker for the game following the decision to dismiss Silva as manager.
The Portuguese's fate was sealed by a string of poor results before a 5-2 mauling by Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.
It is more than six years since Moyes left Everton to take charge at Manchester United. He lasted 10 months at Old Trafford before he was dismissed as successor to Sir Alex Ferguson.
Since that spell, he has worked abroad with Real Sociedad in Spain and taken on jobs at Sunderland and West Ham United, with mixed results.
While the Black Cats were relegated with the Scot in charge, he had a positive impact in east London, especially when it came to finding the best role for Marko Arnautovic.
In total, he took charge of 518 games during his first stint at Goodison Park. The visit of Chelsea could become his 519th match if he is appointed to replace Silva on an interim or permanent basis.
Many Everton fans were unconvinced by the idea on social media.
Others were less critical of Moyes - and had some stern words for their fellow supporters over being quick to dismiss the value of bringing him back into the fold.
Chelsea have won only two of their last six games in all competitions.
Prior to beating Aston Villa, they lost to West Ham after drawing with Valencia in the Champions League.
Manchester City had also managed to get the better of Lampard's men prior to that European tie.
At the start of November they drew 4-4 in an action-packed match with Ajax before beating Crystal Palace 2-0.
Victory over Everton would not send Chelsea any higher in the table due to goal difference, however.
If City were to lose to Manchester United in the Manchester derby, they would be tied with the Blues on points if the visitors won at Goodison Park.
With Pep Guardiola's side currently boasting a goal difference of 26 to the goal difference of nine run up by Chelsea so far this season, the champions would remain ahead of their west London rivals.
