Netflix starts roll-out of its password sharing crackdown

Netflix has begun the roll-out of its password sharing crackdown, which until now has been restricted to South America. The streaming company is now bringing in new rules in Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain.

Anyone who wants someone who doesn't live in their household to use the same account will now have to pay an additional fee, reports the BBC.

A Netflix spokesman said: "Over the last year, we've been exploring different approaches to address this issue in Latin America, and we're now ready to roll them out more broadly in the coming months, starting today in Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain."

Users in the four new locations will be asked to set a "primary location" for their account and manage who has access to it. Users will pay between £3.50 and £5.32 to add up to two 'sub-accounts' to their subscription.

The move is expected to be rolled out worldwide in the weeks ahead.
