Netflix's new film Cocaine Hippos could be their most trippy yet

Upcoming Netflix comedy Cocaine Hippos sounds like it could be the streaming giant's most bizarre yet.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has commissioned a new comedy named Cocaine Hippos, the premise of which is as wild as the title suggests.

Comedian Jermaine Fowler is set to star in the tale from writer Jordan VanDina.

The film is inspired by the true story of hippopotamuses who were imported to Columbia from Africa in the 1980s to live on the large estate of drug kingpin Pablo Escobar.

Following Escobar's murder in 1993, his menagerie of diverse pets was sold off to zoos or new owners, but the hippos remained on the land and became an invasive species.

Cocaine Hippos has been described as a mash-up of The Hangover and Tropic Thunder and will see a gang of friends find a clue to where Escobar's lost treasure is but find themselves assaulted by the crime world and the rather deadly hippos.

Well, this just sounds insane but in a good way!

Writer Jordan VanDina tweeted about the upcoming film and shared his delight at the news of its production.

He wrote: "Hey!!! I wrote an insane movie about hippos and cocaine!!!! What a time to be alive!!"

Indeed, but if you want even more of a Pablo Escobar fix you can always binge-watch every season of Netflix series Narcos.

Cocaine Hippos does not currently have a release date.
